What Happens When You Back a Donkey With Nothing to Lose Into a Corner?

After the passage of the immensely unpopular healthcare reform bill, much has been said and written about the pounding the Democrats are going to take in November.  Democratic Congress members and Senators are retiring in never before seen numbers rather than face their angry constituents and a tough re-election battle.  Even Democratic strategists and supporters are lamenting the strong potential for the sweeping of Democrats from the majority position in Congress.

While there is much pleasure being taken regarding this prediction by those who are opposed to the direction the Democrats are taking this country, there is one big question that remains.  What happens when you back a donkey with nothing to lose into a corner?

The Democrats in Congress have shown a propensity for willingly and arrogantly ignoring the will of the people in their push to implement their agenda come hell or high water.  They passed the so-called healthcare reform bill despite the majority of Americans rejecting it in poll after poll.  Their main argument was that Americans would learn to love it once they understood what it entailed and how they would benefit.  If the Democrats were willing to do this before it became clear there could be a major political power shift coming in November, one can only wonder what will happen now.

I have heard a considerable number of conspiracy theories over this very subject, from stolen elections through electoral fraud to the cancellation of elections after a staged terrorist event on American soil to a brown shirt-style suppression of opposition candidates.  I really think these are just wild accusations from really angry, imaginative individuals.  Could it happen?  Possibly.  But, not only would it be highly unlikely for such activities to be successful on a national level, I still have enough faith in the American people that they would not stand for such behavior.  And I honestly don’t think Democratic leaders are dumb enough, powerful enough, or deranged enough to even seriously consider attempting such a wild move.

What does worry me is what they will do with the knowledge they are likely going to lose exclusive power in November.  With many Democrats not willing to face their constituents in a bid for re-election, they have nothing to lose and no one to answer to.  Basically they are nothing more than kids in a candy store looking for the ultimate sugar high.  There is nothing to stop them from passing and implementing some of their more radical policy dreams in their push for greater central government control over the lives of the American people. Their drive to change the cultural, ideological, and philosophical landscape of this great country can proceed at full speed ahead with no speed bumps, traffic cops, or red lights to impede their progress.  Is there a legislative scorched earth strategy being put into place by Democratic leadership in an attempt to get some of their most radical policies put into law before being swept from power? Will they try to ram through Cap and Trade?  Or will it be some other, more draconian, environmental policy?  Will there be an immigration reform bill that gives amnesty, or citizenship, to all those who are currently in this country in violation of established law?  Will there be further attempts to take over the financial sectors?  Will there be a value added tax forced upon the American people in an attempt to pay for the skyrocketing federal spending spree? All of these legislative issues are currently in circulation in various congressional committees with nothing standing in the way of their passage.  Of course, there should be no illusions that if any of these bills be passed President Obama would be more than happy to sign them into law as quickly as they can get to his desk and he can grab a pen.

In the end, what happens when you back a donkey with nothing to lose into a corner?  America pays heavily with its culture, political landscape, and institutions permanently and irreversibly changed.  With the Democrats having nothing to lose and no one to answer to, anything becomes a real possibility.  What remains to be seen is how much damage will have been done once the dust has settled.

U.S. Government To Save Billions By Cutting Wasteful Senator Program

WASHINGTON—In an effort to reduce wasteful spending and eliminate non-vital federal services, the U.S. government announced plans this week to cut its long-standing senator program, a move it says will help save more than $300 billion each year.

According to officials, the decision to cut the national legislative body was reached during a budget review meeting on Tuesday. After hours of deliberation, it was agreed that the cost of financing U.S. senators far outweighed the benefits they provided.

"Now more than ever, we must eliminate needless spending wherever possible," President Obama said at a press conference Wednesday. "When we sat down to go over our annual budget, we asked ourselves, where can we safely trim back? What programs can we do away with without negatively impacting the American people? Which bloated and ineffective institutions can we no longer justify having around?"

"The answer was obvious," Obama added. "The U.S. Senate just needed to go."

Established in 1789 as a means of overseeing the passage of bills into law, the once-promising senator program has reportedly failed to contribute to the governing of the nation in any significant way since 1964. Last year alone, approximately $450 billion was funneled into the legislative chamber, an amount deemed fiscally unsound considering how few citizens actually benefit in any way from its existence.

In fact, the program has gone unchecked for so long that many in Washington are now unable to recall what purpose U.S. senators were originally meant to serve.

"I'm sure when it was first introduced the U.S. Senate seemed like a worthwhile public service that would aid vast segments of the population and play an important role in the years to come," said Sheila McKenzie, president of the watchdog group the American Center for Responsible Government. "But in reality, this program has been a complete and utter failure."

"It simply doesn't work," she added. "We've been pouring taxpayer dollars into this outdated relic for far too long."

An analysis conducted last week revealed a number of troubling flaws within the long-running, heavily subsidized program, including a lack of consistent oversight, no clear objectives or goals, the persistent hiring of unqualified and selfishly motivated individuals, and a 100 percent redundancy rate among its employees.

Moreover, the study found that the U.S. government already funds a fully operational legislative body that appears to do the exact same job as the Senate, but which also provides a fair and proportional representation of the nation's citizens and has rules in place to prevent one individual from holding the operations of the entire chamber hostage until he is guaranteed massive federal spending projects for his home state of Alabama.

Not only have U.S. Senators cost the country billions of dollars in misspent funds over the years, but Washington insiders claim they have also derailed a wide range of other government programs, from social welfare to job creation to environmental protection.

"Even just the space the Senate currently occupies could be put to better use," consumer advocate Michael Dodgerson said. "Were the government to open a day-care center, a homeless shelter, or even an affordable restaurant in that building, it would make more of a difference in the lives of everyday Americans than what's there now."

So far, reaction to the cutback has been overwhelming positive, with many across the country calling it a long-awaited step toward progress.

Still, a small pocket of the nation's populace vehemently disagreed with Tuesday's decision.

"This is outrageous," said Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut-area resident and concerned citizen who makes more than $150,000 a year, enjoys full health care benefits, and lives comfortably in a large, non-foreclosed home. "The U.S. Senate has always looked out for my best interests. It's always done right by me."

Added Lieberman, "Without it, I'll have no choice but to exploit my extensive connections in the real estate, legal, insurance, and pharmaceutical industries to obtain strictly honorary positions at large companies that, in exchange for my subservience over the years and the prestige of my name, will compensate me generously and allow me to continue living a privileged life without contributing even a moment of my time to the society that has made it all possible."

I am sure that many Americans would agree with this. I know I do.

Obamacare simplified into a single image

While everyone is saying what a complicated issue healthcare is, here is a single image that truly gets to the heart of Obamacare as passed by Congress and touted as the savior of the middle class and poor of this country.  The only question I have is how can one morally believe that forcing someone else to take care of your problems be ok?  Under this theory, robbery and theft should be legal as the ones who are victimized are only helping those who are more disadvantaged as they are.

Universal Healthcare and the Commerce Clause

This is an old paper I wrote for a course in my Master’s Degree program which examines the unconstitutionality of a single payer healthcare system in regards to the Commerce Clause.  Despite the focus on single payer systems, it is equally pertinent to the monstrosity of a bill that was just sent to Obama’s desk for signing.
